As a few of you will be aware I have taken on a new allotment without on site water. I thought don't worry about it I will think of something,well I haven't and I am not to practical.
So I need a water butt,well I could always buy one,the allotment is free for a year so invest that money.
So 1st a cheap water butt,would you say120 lts.?.??
Any cheaper ideas ?.??
No sheds so how do I get water from sky to top of butt.
Don't worry about making it rain,I am very capable of doing a rain dance
Please note that when using the term butt,I am at al times referring to the English phrasing

Amazing as we type the wife has found a 200 lt.butt on eBay for collection and guess what it's just down the road.

No sheds so how do I get water from sky to top of butt.
Could you perhaps get a piece of wood (e.g. varnished mdf) that is big enough to mimic a shed roof, stick edging on the side and guttering onto the bottom of it, and place it on an angle above the butt so it captures & funnels water into the butt?

Now for the next problem
Why not something like an upside-down, old-fashioned lampshade, made of sheet ally, and serving as both butt cover and rain collector. Same width as butt , and better than nothing?

make some compost bins, run a lid/ roof across them draining into the water butt.

No it's just a small private allotment in a village setting where the land is in trust.i have a plot on another site but came across this one by accident on a walk and couldn't resist. No sheds no water no toilets,really back to basics but really nice.
As I said I couldn't stop myself.

it's good that villages think of these things. Quite a lot of the gardens here are quite large, so allsorts can be grown...just wish I didn't have white onion rot but will be garlic watering again this year
