Broody hen
« on: April 25, 2010, 11:53 »
Hello, my hen is in the nest box where all the other chickens lay. My friend is giving me some fertille eggs to put under her so i can hatch chicks, but the problem is, can i move her to a different nest box?  I have built another one for her so is it ok if i put her in there?
Thanks  :)

If you are sure that she is broody then transfer her and the eggs into her new broody ark and shut her in the dark for the evening (I find this helps them settle - but this is just my way) then let her into her own run in the morning. She may not want to get off her eggs and become a little bit aggressive but I lift mine off twice a day unless they get off them selves.
Staffies are softer than you think.

We left our hen sitting on her eggs for about a week to 10 days to be sure, then we scooped up her nest, on some card and moved her to her own little broody box, where she has hatched out 5 babies, the problem we had was once she had hatched  these, she got off the nest and forgot about the others, as she needed to feed the others, and all the eggs got cold, so i took them away and put them in the inncy and hatched a further 3, plus one baby that was cold as it had just hatched when she left the nest. i am hoping to introduce them back with her over the next day or so once they are strong and all feeding well
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!
