help to id tree please
« on: March 20, 2011, 21:16 »
To cut a long story short 4 years ago i bought a plum tree form woolworths, think it was victoria plum,it was nothing more than a wee stick, but i have cared for it happerly since then. But now im beging to wonder what it is

Its now taller than me (im 5ft 5) and it has branches from 2inchs from the bottom.

It has sharp spines/thorns which i dont think plums have (please note im not pointing to the rose stems )

And it has for the first time got flowers, these are from med way up to top

close as i can get to open flower

any ideas please, it seems a bit sloe like to me or am i totally daft and some plums have thorns lol
guess you can tell im not greatly clued up on gardening :embarassed:

all plum trees have evolved from the blackthorn tree and the thorns will be on branches that have gone wild.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Are these branches coming from the base of the tree?

My plum tree that died had thorns, and the few plums it did have were little yellow wild ones.

What makes them go wild then Joy???

If the branches grow from below the lump/graft on the main stem they will be from the wild rootstock, rather than from the grafted good' variety that you wanted :(

I've just sawn a plum tree down on my plot, all it had in 9 years was a couple of very small plums.

Then I go & find out that it grew from a sucker from another tree. Looks like I'd been tending a wild plum for those years,
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The small yellow wild plum originated as a mix between the blackthorn (sloe) and the cherry plum, they may have the thorns of the blackthorn and have small yellow juicy sweet fruits - these are what I picked and bought round for you  :)

I didn't know that!! I've got several of these shrubby trees with some thorns and they are in full, magnificent white blossom now, bringing in the bees. The birds love them too for the insect life.
Year before last I got a good crop of small yellow plums (lovely!) and I thought they were just cherry plums. Now I know they're wild!!
Hoping it's a 2 year cycle......

I love them and as you can buy them like this I might get a few more for my garden - the chickens really liked them  :)
