« on: July 09, 2011, 12:45 »
Hi was wondering if anyone can help .Not sure what happened yesterday but
came home to find mum scrunched up by the fence inconsiderate baby jumping
all over her.She can stand up if i help her and seemed alot better after food and
drink but I took out baby she didnt seem that bothered baby is nearly 5 weeks
old I noticed she has a very dirty bum so bath on the agenda She is a silky bantam
baby is a maran.
Has the baby injured her by jumping on her ? :(
can  or should I seperate them now ?
She needs a bath what do I do with baby then ?
she also feels under weight to me, feed her up a bit but with what?
should i keep both indoors but in separate areas?
Thanks hope some one can help and actually understand what Ive typed

she need food and fluids - the later being more important. Do you only have the one chick? have they been in full sight of the other chickens? Whilst mum is being bathed and blow dried off chick will be fine - give it chick crumb and water.

they baby does not need her mom any longer as she should have all her feathers in now so she could go with the others that know her I think.

But for your broody there are some things you might want to check
1.   Does your hen have a temperature?  You can take this by feeling under the wing of one of your other girls then under her wing to see if she feels any hotter.

2.   Does she have worms - when was the last time you wormed your hens and what did you use?  We use Flubenvet for worming Marriage's Layers Pellets PLUS Flubenvet Wormer less of a hassle I find.

3.   How does her crop feel?

4.   Is she eating, drinking and poohing ok?

5.   What colour is her comb?
6.   Also has she started to lay again?

but if she is really bad off  i would get her to the vet and see what is going on.

Hi thanks for quick replies Joyfull and Al Hathaway did have 2 chickes but
one taken by cat   :( the chick has crumbs and water they have been about
6 ft away from others. hens been over to visit even sitting on top of cage
while out and about. She doesnt have a temperature ,I use diatom earth
for everything not been doing it for long 3 weeks ,her comb is normal colour,
when I bought her in was eating and drinking fine just not very stable
standing left side seems to be the trouble ,shes not laying eggs yet.
Do you think that chick may have hurt her leg ?
Will leave chick in pen and bring her in for shampoo and
blow dry see how she is if still not too good what should I do with chick
if she needs a bit of get well time ???
