Poorly hen?
« on: December 20, 2007, 20:32 »
Hi Everyone
I know there will be someone out there who can give me some advice.......please. One of my girls is passing blood when laying, its also looking like her back end is a bit messy but hard to tell as they are muddy too.  She is not very tame & a nightmare to catch, so I can't get a proper look, should I be worrying more than I am at the moment. They free range during the day & have layers pellets & grit etc.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

You say her back end is a little messy ? do you mean blooming ? is there a pinkish "balloon" poking out a little or a lot ?
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

If there is a balloon showing she could be suffering from a prolapse a small one can be washed and gently pushed back in. Either way I'd isolate her and keep her calm, as the others may peck at the blood or is it just on the egg ?

Only guessing at this Mumsy on of mine had  a prolapse few years ago and I can remember her having blooming eggs for a day or too before.

Just clarify for us please is the blood on the egg or in ? never thought to ask this first time

See Aunty beat me to it on that one   your in good hands now listen to Aunty  :D

It does sound more like damage than an infection, but you do need to catch her and have a good look

hi, now would be the time to catch her, while she's at roost and calm. use a torch and if you can make the light red. its always best to catch them in the dark as its alot less stressful for a scared chicken. and you really dont want a stressed chicken, they look so sad.

could it be coccidiosis Aunty?  I've got a couple of pullets with some blood in their faeces, but they aren't displaying any other symptoms

One of my ex bat hens (rita) had a prolapse recently, I kept her indoors in a pet carrier with clean straw and access to food & water.

Bathed her rear end twice daily with diluted dettol & smeared fucidin cream over the sticky out bits (available from vet).  Also vet gave her combined antibio/antiinflammatory injections 2 or 3 over a period of two weeks.

Cleared up great & now Rita is fighting fit.

Good luck with yours.

PS  Rita also got sour crop (I reckon as a result of antibios) so fed her with live yoghurt (she wasn't keen and it went everwhere).
