Strawberry Leaf Pruning
« on: September 20, 2020, 15:04 »
Hi Everyone,
My strawberries finished fruiting at the end of June/beginning of July. The leaves still look green, with a few new ones forming in the crown. I read somewhere that you have to prune the leaves, to make room for new ones, even if they look healthy. Is that correct? Never heard that before. Can someone with more experience of strawberries please advise. If i have to prune, is it too late now anyway? Thanks.

Good afternoon bobbyt,  the later you leave pruning the leave the less time the plant has to grow fresh new ones before the frosty / snowy weather approaches.

I hacked mine back a couple of weeks ago, I now have fresh runners pegged down for next year we also have a few strawbs showing! ::)

Cheers.  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

My rule is ' if it's not a strawberry get rid of red'.
Red or otherwise discoloured leaves , red stalks that mean the leaves will soon discolour snip them out with kitchen scissors.
A healthy leaf will build up the plants energy store for next year but once they stop doing their job it's time for them to go.

Thanks both, I rooted the runners into pots and once rooted firmly I snipped them off and grew them on in greenhouse for a few weeks. Now planted them out into a new bed I am creating. Hopefully that was the right thing to do?
So to sum up, I should just leave all the green leaves alone, and snip off any discoloured leaves that may appear?

I was a bit late this year but about 6 weeks ago I chopped off all the leaves of my strawberries (do it every year), clear it all up into the compost bin(no straw used) give them a good feed (organic) hoe the beds & water well. New leaves soon reappear plus new flowers but I nip those off to let the plant concentrate on recovering.
