Onion Q
« on: November 15, 2010, 12:53 »
I have just been in the garden clearing leaves and planting garlic. Under a mound of leaves I discovered some forgotten onions happily growing away. will they be ok to eat even though they have been in the ground so long? Thought I could pop 'em in tonights stew. :)

Thankyou, I know it was probably a daft question but I had no idea.
Stew it is for those rogue onions then.

Another onion question. While in the US we used to eat vidalia onions which were very sweet when eaten raw. I cannot find an equivalent in the UK - any ideas?
Vidalia is a trade name and not a variety.

Vidalia is also a short season onion which you wouldn't get in the UK anyway. A possible alternative is Walla Walla, a very sweet type which is marketed in packaged seeds. And yes, Vidalias are marketed as a seed variety now, but very very expensive even in North America. Georgia is trying very hard to keep that onion within their own state as it's a major income earner for them.
