Stitching up the holes in debris netting
« on: May 26, 2009, 12:42 »
Any tips on a good method and materials to use.  I have lots of good old fashioned garden twine, but that's far to big to fit through the eye of a normal needle.  But, as I have 2 rows of holes to stitch, and the bed is close to 10 metres long, no way can I do it by hand.

need to do it asap, planted out 7 Caulis, 8 sprouts, 20 Savoy cabbage, 12 spring cabbage and 6 red cabbage yesterday, covered in lovely new debris netting, then realised I needed to do something about all the holes that run along it.  I'm now worried that swarms of hungry egg laden cabbage whites are making a bee line to my lovely brassica bed.  And I'm stuck at work. Arrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

What you want is a sacking needle or a sailmakers needle, sacking needles you could try  HMP Parkhurst or a chandlers for the sailmakers

do you know anyone with a sewing machine ~ ask them to stitch the holes up for you and offer them some veg in return ;) It will take them seconds and the veg will make up for the time and the cotton reel !!!

I've used debris netting and unless you've really stretched it widthways, I can't see a butterfly problem with the eyelets, even then it's a squeeze.

As carrot fly protection there may be.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

20 sq m, (or 30 dependant on width), or debris netting is rather heavy & cumbersome!

I cut to fit my beds then sew !!
but I do see where you are coming from DD if you have huge areas to cover.

I have sewn Enviromesh on a domestic sewing machine.  You need plenty of space!

To sew by hand I would use nylon filament and a large blunt needle.

I mend the fruit cage netting with garden twine and the sort of plant label that has a hole in it as a 'needle'.

Cheers,

I keep my debris netting togther with old fashioned wooden spring clothes pegs - plastic ones are no good as the springs are rubbish but the wooden ones work fine. :)

I agree with diggerjoe, I do this too. The other thing you can do is feed a few lengths of bamboo cane through the holes & cable tie or wire them to your frame somehow - it helps to make the whole thing more rigid too.

i used fishing line with a slight overlap on the netting and a simple knot on the eyelets. took some time but you only have to do it once ;)

Electricians tie wraps, I joined two 5 x 2 metre lengths together to make 4 metres width in about ten minutes.
Always look ahead, there are no regrets in that direction
