Title: How good is Pig Manure mixed with Horse Manure?
Post by: MichelleC on December 05, 2011, 13:45
Hi all - I wonder if anyone can advise me about Pig Manure mixed with Horse Manure. I've recently being offered this at £15 per tonne including delivery. After doing a bit of research on various sites the only downside I can see with pig manure is that it smells and is possibly harder to handle. I have yet to find out whether it is well rotted and the ratio with the horse manure. So my quetions are:-
1) Is it good stuff anyway if rotted?
2) I'm currently growing green manure (white mustard) so if I do buy the above should I wait until spring and them dig them in together? Any advice is much apprecitated.

shouldn't really smell once rotted, and I wouldn't use it unless/until it is, other than that it's all good stuff.

If it is already rotted then you can dig it in, in spring, but not where are carrots/roots are going.

As said, once manure is properly rotted it should just smell like soil and no animal stink at all.

Pig manure is not as rich in nutrients as other manures are, but its still useful, especially if mixed with straw which adds more tilth. If mixed with horse, then you'll get soil bulk as well as nutrients.

If it's not already rotted and you have somewhere to store it I'd put it aside until next Autumn by which time it will have rotted down.

As you won't be growing brassicas on the area the mustard is on you can either wait til spring to dig it in or better still do it now if the manure is rotted and you feel that area need manuring.
