Water from a bath to water veg
« on: April 03, 2008, 10:33 »
Hi all, just wanted to ask some advice on whether i can re-use water from a bath which has had soap and shampoo in it? If so, can it be used both for plants and veg? If it can be used for veg can it be used for all types of veg? Also the same with plants, can it be used for all types of plants?
Seems such a massive waste of water to let it go.

Best wishes all

Stephen

During the last real drought people were encouraged to use bath water on their gardens, soapy water is said to be good against greenfly etc

I did a lot of this last summer as I am on metered water. My bathroom is up on second floor and not near window - but I was carrying bucketfuls down two flights of stairs and much more fun, when nobody else was outside, chucking it out of the window and trying to aim it into container a long way down!  The grass below the window benefitted hugely. As for soap and shampoo etc - I did make an effort not to use very much. I was probably very dirty but the garden did very well out of it.
I will be looking for a small pump or  along hose to syphon it this year, I think, as I intend to recycle bathwater again.

Over here, greywater, as used bathwater is known, is not recommended for any food crops. However, it's great for flower beds.  Something to do with dead skin cells on food crops that is the problem. You may say you'll only water from below, but it takes only one watering from above and you're into risks.

To add my little twopennerth :-)
I heard that using water from your fish tank/pond is also good for plants too, not sure if flower or veggies or both though
Anyone tried it?

Because you'd be spreading the skin cells, any residual tub cleaners, deodorant residues and possibly any 'wee' trickles or anal scrubbings onto something you'll want to eat. Urgh. Not for me, thanks .
