Seeds - how viable is old seed?
« on: April 03, 2008, 09:29 »
I've got some french bean seed that I bought in France six years ago. I've put them in a jar with wet tissue and covered with black paper. If they germinate I'll sow some. Does anyone know how long you can keep seed for sowing? :?

depends on the seed some remain viable for years like tomatoes etc some are best sown fresh like angelica, others will last for centuries. A lot depends on the conditions they are stored in too.

I agree there, Richy. Dill, cukes and carrots are better off with fresh every year, they just don't keep well. I've just tried out some 2002 tom seeds a friend gave me and every one came up despite being stored in an old envelope. Beets decline with each passing year, same with peas and beans. I'm guessing that maybe 50% of the French beans will sprout after all this time.
