Too late to chit my potatoes?
« on: April 02, 2008, 17:39 »
New forum member (and second year of veg gardening in stone raised beds)

Hi! I have only just received 3 types of seed potatoes and the grow bags to grow them in. Charlotte, Swift and Maris Peer
Is it too late to chit them? Should I put them straight in or just do this for the earlies or start off the chitting for a week or two then put them all in?
I'm clearly a bit late but hoping they will still grow anyway...

Thoughts much appreciated, have searched extensively and everyone does seem to recommend chitting although I'm sure that I read that it is less necessary using growbags although don't know why this would be..

Thanks
BB

Chitting isnt really nessisary, ( im irish :) ) however it does tend to speed up the growing,

Chitt away if you like for a week or two and plant in ... im sure older heads will shout at me , but as it has been said before

werkz for me

Oh, BB, what a load of bungers you seem to have attracted, I'm one too.

No, really, it's only done to try and fasten things, as said, does make no much difference any otherwise. :D

dont worry about chitting them its not entirely needed i would just plant them in your grow bags
Everyone should grow their own veg and know where their food is coming from even if it is only a one pot on a patio or balcony Grow Something!!

I think the thing about chitting is,if you recieve your seed potatoes a lot earlier than you intend to plant them then you might as well chit them.
Lets face it what else is there to do with 'em ?
But I wouldn't delay planting just to chit if you receive them later. :D
