The OH has quite few rabbits and guinea pigs (she does rescue and rehoming) which generates quite a lot of waste - namely straw, hay and shavings. This normally goes into our green wheelie bin or if the straw/hay is reasonably dry it gets burned.

Can it be composted and if so how long will it take to become usuable? I have made compost bins using pallets 3-4 ft square.

We compost all ours, and i presume it works well because my dad doesn't complain! No idea how long it takes though, I throw it in the compost bin and never look again!

Our rabbits and chickens have Bliss in their hutches and coops which all gets composted

I am Mulberry's mum and can tell you it takes about six months to be useable compost (we use a compost accelerator as we have lots to compost and only three bins!)

We also have chickens waste which I put in the same bin which I understand helps things along. I know that my OH uses some other bedding material which is compost friendly the name of which escapes me at the moment.

Compost it, although it does take time in a static heap. Either turn it regularly or if funds allow you might wish to consider a compost tumbler.

We are now using rapport which comes from the same stable as hemcore(apparently) instead of shavings. I understand it is similar to Bliss. The straw/hay that has bits of food goes in for the chickens to sort out,we just bag it up and tip it into a heap and leave them to it.

As as when chickens need cleaning it then goes in the compost.
