We got our last bale from Howsom's at Old Leake.

But I've just discovered the Horse/Pet place next to the Bulb museum at Pinchbeck.
They do limited chicken feed but do shavings and straw for horses. I think a bale was about £3.50 but could be wrong.
All the sprays and garlic, etc too.

Very clean and friendly. And not as expensive as they could be !

Think there will be loads of straw soon, combines everywhere today & lots of tractors taking it away................its such a lovely sight, the fields all golden..............
£2 a bale I paid last year & it nearly lasted that long too!!!!!!!!!

how much straw do you think I'll need to get through a whole year?  My source is selling in 18x18x20 and 18x18x46 bales.

I have been using shredded paper as bedding and in the nestbox for the last 5 years and the only downside I can think of is that if it does get wet and they lay an egg on it, the paper sticks and a couple of times the ink ran onto the shell.

It saves me going to buy hay/woodshavings and several people save their shredded paper for me and pass it on when they see me, when it's dirty it goes in the compost heap along with garden waste and makes fantastic compost.

So less petrol used less landfill used and good compost and it's free, win win win win
