Chook not herself??
« on: June 21, 2009, 20:01 »
Hi, Can anyone suggest what might be wrong with our Black Star?
She is about 6 months old and has been laying for a few weeks.  Today she has been spending a lot of time in the nest box, I took her out after a few hours this morning and removed an egg although don't know for sure if it was hers.

We let the girls out to free rnage at lunch time but when we came back this evening she was again in the nest box, I got her out again and took her to the water and she did drink and had a good scratch around but she seems very skitty and keeps shaking her back end and is not squatting like she usually does when being picked up.  Poos all normal looking.

We have found a few soft shelled eggs recently although we have grit and oyster shell out, not sure if these are from her?

Any ideas????

Tracey

ah! I wondered that but thought that hybrids didn't really go broody and actually assumed she was a bit young because she hasn't been laying very long?

Am I doing the right thing then, just taking her out every few hours to drink and eat?  Guess there is not much else I can do and she will sort herself out??

When chickens first start laying they can lay soft shelled eggs, Hybrids are not supposed to go broody, so are certain pure breeds, but some still do. Fingers crossed this is all it is.

Get some lube on your finger and check the vent internally for stray bits of egg. Could be egg bound or bits of a soft shelled egg stuck and gone bad.
