Parsnip Germination
« on: June 03, 2007, 09:39 »
I have been hanging off doing this post so as to see if the system worked.
I bought some parsnip seeds and the instructions said to sow and cover with 5mm potting mix, water the row with BOILING water and cover with a wooden plank for 10 days.
I did this, took the plank off after 10 days and then went to the USA for 2 weeks. I am now home and I have a very healthy row of parsnip seedlings 3-4 inches high.
Point to remember I am planting these in early winter so it may not be good for summer sowing.
Anyone else heard of this method?

I've heard of the boiling water trick - the theory is that it kills any weed seeds in the drill as well as providing moisture for the parsnip seed.

Are your drills fairly free of weeds?

Yes, the row is fairly free of weeds. That is how I can see them. I am not having to search for them in the usual jungle.
