strawberries in my greenhouse
« on: April 14, 2009, 21:19 »
Hello!
I have lots of very happy strawberry plants in big pots in my greenhouse, they are runners that i didn't have any ground to put them into and so they went into the greenhouse but have stayed there cos it looked as thought they were loving it there. now they are chucking out lots of flowers but obviously the bees can't get at them to pollinate them so instead i have been tapping the flower stalks at every opportunity (like i do with my indoor toms). Is this sufficient to pollinate them or should i do something else? I have room for them out on the plot now but am worried that if they go outside now the shock could ruin my chances of a crop.
Any help/advice would be lovely!
Cheers,
SP

Harden them off quick and then get them outside, straws are a very hardy crop and will be ok though they may be checked this year. It may be worth trying to pollinate them yourself with a little brush as well as the tap?

In the meantime, just pop the straws out during the day and tuck up at night, its not too cold out now
