Feed made with tomato leaves
« on: January 11, 2015, 13:34 »
Back in September I was watching an episode of Gardener's World and I'm sure Monty mentioned making a compost tea from tomato leaves and branches. I've had a nasty brew steeping in a covered bucket since then, but I can't find anything on the internet about this.

Has anyone done this in the past or am I wasting my time?
Thanks :)

He did, but I thought he mentioned using old tomato plants in a throwaway line. I can't remember what episode of GW it was.

I think the throwaway line was to put them straight into the compost bin, if I remember correctly he did not break them up just threw the whole plant onto his bin.

I make "tea" out of all sorts of plants, particularly pernicious weeds with deep roots - steeping them in water for a couple of weeks definitely kills them and, like Comfrey, things with strong & deep root systems are good at hauling up nutrients from the depths.

So I suppose anything-would-do, but the leaves on my Tomato plants get manky, for one reason or another, through the season and I'm not sure I want to make a solution out of them and put it back on the plants - possible disease etc. issues.

Perhaps I should, however, dilute them to less than one-molecule-per-batch and offer them back to the Toamto plant as a homoeopathic remedy?!!
