Composting in the greenhouse
« on: February 28, 2019, 11:31 »
I have two square pallet compost areas. They make good compost, bust it’s slow going (2yrs) for any meaningful output. It’s only Mrs JRKO and I and we just don’t produce great amounts of compostable waste so it builds very slowly.

I’ve recently taken to filling black dustbins (with plenty of air holes) as a pre composting solution.  They’ve been in my greenhouse over winter and thyre cooking nicely!  There’s even worms in there

My greenhouse is a diy affair, built from double glazing and multilayered Perspex roof. Ie it gets really hot in the summer.  It’s hit 28° already!

Are there any issues in continuing through the year as the temps rise? (48° peak)

Temperatures that high are certain to kill the worm and insect life if they haven't had the foresight to vacate the premises PDQ!

It's also likely that most types of fungi and bacteria which break down the material will be killed off too - whether enough will remain to continue the composting process is anyone's guess, but it would certainly be much slower.

An interesting read HERE (if you like that sort of thing!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks JayG

Just in wintertime then!  At least I can make meaningful compost during the colder months
