Title: Greenhouse revamp
Post by: noshed on January 30, 2007, 16:18
I've only just noticed the construction thing - not been paying full attention. Diverted by the end of my poor car, which has now been written off. But Lightfingers Larry was up before the beak yesterday and pleaded guilty to nicking my car and other acts of dreadfulness. So one up to the Met.

Anyway I'm wrestling with the problem of anchoring my greenhouse. As many of you will know it is of fairly light construction, prone to aerobatics in high wind. It's roughly an 8' cube.
I'm going to resite it next to the fence so I can attach two corners to the fence with something - wire?
But I can't decide what to do about the other corners. I'm thinking of getting some hefty treated timber and making a frame on the ground and screwing the greenhouse to that - but what's the best way of anchoring the frame to the ground - cementing seems a bit too much like hard work but I was thinking of some arrangement involving metposts.
Anyone got any good ideas?
I'm keen to finish building and get on with growing as soon as possible.
And I have to get my push bike back on the road...

Go for metaposts one in each corner should do you especially if you use the longer sort, But concrete will be cheaper.

I'm in the process of putting my GH up at the moment too - it's 8x6.  We're bolting the base to pressure treated fence posts lashed together as a frame - and will be drilling 4-5 holes in each and hammering a 2' length of steel through each into the ground - sort of like blooming massive nails, I suppose.  I wanted sleepers, but couldn't get any for the right price (ie free)! So we'll see how that goes...

Mine sits on 2 rows of tanalised fence posts that I got from B&Q when it burnt down cost me a £1 each. It's not bolted to the ground or anything and has never moved. But it's a cedar wood one so it's pretty heavy that cost me a £1 out of the paper.  :D

when I put mine up I anchored the frame by digging eight holes around the base (2 each side) and then drilling throught the base and then got some galvanised hooks from B+Q and filled the holes with concrete (£2 a bag), the base is now solid.

My greenhouse used to belong to a university, they were gonna knock it down and wouldn't let me take it cos of health and safety. So me and a few mates cut it awy from the foundations with an angle grinder and made off with it in the night. This means it was entirely unanchored so I sank it 18" into the ground and built some steps down into it.

noshed its not fair, I've not got a shed OR a greenhouse yet, man, I've got nothing to worry about!

Got a bid on ebay though, been there for a few hours and nobody bid against it yet.

Here's hoping.

It'll open up a whole new world of worry Jake - and opportunity of course. Good luck with the bid - is it for a greenhouse or a shed?

Its a greenhouse and I've been outbid, still has a day to go so I'm gonna wait until a few minutes before the end. Seems a popular thing.

There was a greenhouse in Spalding that OH wanted to get.  Its not far from us and started at £20.  No bids for days as its got about 25 panes of glass missing and is in a right state, but some idiot started bidding on it!!!!

If you really want it, wait until a few seconds from the end - how's your sniping technique?

That's a bit underhand!  I don't do that, but my method usually works quite well:

 Open the listing in two seperate windows, and arrange side by side.
 In one, enter your absolute max bid (as an irregular amount, eg £23.87)
 Don't confirm the bid yet, just get it to the window where you have have to press the one button to finish the bid.
 Use the other window to watch the last few minutes of the auction by continually refreshing the page.
 When the time remaining gets to just a few seconds (I usually do it at 5, but it depends on how quick your refresh works), hit the confirm bid button in the first window.

Assuming your max bid is higher than anyone elses, you should get lucky and win - if not, then you've not ben tempted to exceed your maximum and get carried away!

didn't get it. I think the person who got it paid too much. It needed a bit of repairing and went for £83.77 in the end.

I'll keep looking in the buysell.

i saw an ebay clock once which i think allowed you to track ebay time. not been able to find it since but some sort of countdown timer would be handy, in the quest to have the winning bid

i put my greenhouse on tow rows of bricks then used cement to bed it down. i was going to bolt it and all that stuff but its been up nearly a year now and even in strong winds it does not move at all. it is glazed which makes it heavy. i think the plastic stuff is to light and would require a lot of securing. and possibly the parts of the green house structure used to secure it down, would tare in high winds allowing the greenhouse to topple. the aluminium is only very thin.

We get them offered free for removal in our loacal paper very often. If you do not have one yet its worth a look. Mine only took a couple of hours to remove. Then trailer it home. Make a "A" frame for the glass or clean it thoughly and lay it on some pillows in the boot a bit at a time.
