Title: growers to layers
Post by: Beano on August 11, 2010, 08:54
We have two 23 wk old legbar pullets who have been on a mixture of growers pellets, layers pellets and mixed corn. We have had no eggs yet and they have been with the older ladies for the first time this week therefore only on layers pellets and mixed corn. I made the mistake of getting growers with medication in it therefore cannot feed them that once they are in with the others.
My questions are: does this do them harm? Are they having too much calcium? Do they still need to be on growers until they lay? Around how old are legbars before they start laying?

I usually start changing mine over onto layers at 15 weeks, just in case they start laying early. Yours should be on it now, with mixed corn given as an afternoon treat. Until you have got them on unmedicated feed should they lay you won't be able to eat any of their eggs which would be a shame. They should start laying (on average) anytime from 24 weeks to 35 weeks.

Thanks joyfull. So being on just layers is fine even though they are not laying then?
It wont overload them with calcium? They havent been on growers this week because the layers and them are eating the same food and I dont want to waste the eggs.
