Solid wheelbarrow tyre...
« on: September 16, 2013, 11:43 »
We had another puncture yesterday, and although I don't mind mending them, (I grow a third hand each time, as there are three tyre levers to manipulate...), there are now eight patches on the tube, and the tyre is pretty thin and cracked now.

I reckon a solid wheel is the answer, but wonder if it will wake the neighbours, as we are a ten-minute walk to the Plot!

Has anyone else had to change to a new solid one, and is it wide enough?

We got a new wheelbarrow recently with a galvanised body and a fetching yellow solid tyre. :) It does a great job and isn't any noisier or more unwieldy in any way than the previous 30 quid builder's style model that we had (which rusted away).

Why I still wonder though, do they insist on putting metal frames on these things? They can manage galvanised frames, but they put those on plastic wheelbarrows.

So romance is definitely alive and kicking, CQ!

Builders barrows do last though, don't they!

I've seen those on Ebay, Arugula, and wondered what they were like.

We have an ordinary Fort barrow, which actually needs a coat of paint on the frame this year, and that is green plastic, but quite strong and light!

There's also a very old steel one down on the plot, and that's got one of the Daughts' pram wheels on it, as the other one rusted away, so there's no accounting for style is there...;0)

I like the "balance" too.  I find them easier to use on heavier loads than a more home-sized barrow.

We also have a trolley (flat bed, fold down sides, 4 wheels) which I find much more convenient for a full load of plants-in-pots.

Those trolleys are great, Kristen, aren't they!

We take the mower and other heavy kit down to the Patch with one of those (Ex Coopers of Stortford), and have recently found that to stop the continual rattling, a couple of bungees hoiked to the sides works wonders!

Mind you, in your garden, you really need a flat-bed lorry with over-night cab don't you:0)?

I bought one last week from an ebay company. 12 ins with a choice of colours (I went for red) and total with p&p was about £11.00. No more punctures or pumping up tyres with a leaky valve fer me
