Title: Cheep tubs wanted
Post by: dobby on September 04, 2006, 14:08: Hi All I'm New hear I whent to Wyevale yesterday and
My wallet is a lot lighter now,
just got my self a cheap green house as well as 27 packets of seeds at 25p each
Now i need to put the green house up :roll:
and see what i can grow first
The wife is going to let me put tubs around the house as well
where can I get some cheap tubs
I live in the manchester area
I have a lode of pumpkin seed's from last year if anyone wonts some
just let me know

the wife said she doesnt want to have to buy any veg next year
so help and advice needed desperately!! Lol!

The green house was £49.99 its a walk in with a roll up zipped frount door 1900mm dep 1250mm acros and 1900mm high
its not glass its a plastic one
with Robust tubular steel construction & heavy duty cover
it had guy ropes and ground pegs
the wife said see how you get on with this one
then you can have a proper one :roll:

It did alright for one season, producing lots of chili peppers and cucumbers, then its cover "UV resistant" cover decided to degrade so now it's loaded with holes. The guy ropes have degraded too so they snap if you try to use them. We had a heck of a time getting it secure (rooftop decking, no way of sticking it down with pegs) in the high winds over the weekend. We can't seem to find a cover for it either, they've discontinued this specific one and the other covers are just enough centimeters out that they won't fit :? I'm glad we only paid £30 for our's...

Rented flat. The winds we get, it wouldn't surprise me if we'd need screws rather than nails... nails would probably just get pulled out!

have decided to make some big tubs out of old pallets
get the pallets remove old nails and make big tubs

The question is when i line them with plastic sheathing do i need to drill holes in the plastic and wood to stop the wood rotting

I will be standing the tubs on bricks so they are of the ground

Post by: ytyynycefn on September 08, 2006, 12:58: I'd say you need holes in the bottom (through both layers) for drainage, also put a good layer of gravel/polychips in the bottom for drainage and to save compost too!

Just been to get some free top soil to from freecycle :lol:
The more I can get for free the better
when im driving round in the van I keep a look out for skips with pallets in
then go back the next day :D

For quite a while I've been keeping hefty gloves in the back of my (ancient and crusty) Land Rover ready for piling old bricks, corrugated iron and carpets (for paths) into the back :) Skippety-doo-dah! I've also bin dived some useful things which I sold on ebay to raise the money for my shed - an outboard motor and a set of Audi alloys covered most of it :D I'm selling a load of old dodo at the moment to raise the money for a greenhouse...

Post by: GrannieAnnie on September 08, 2006, 16:52: Another tip when building wooden tubs to help keep the wood from rotting, when you drill the holes through both plastic and wood for drainage, make them the size of some small bits of piping, perhpas copper left over from plumbing job? The water drains through the pipe and doesn't soak so much into the wood! OH does that sometimes, when he builds wooden tubs.
