Weed wand ? (not sure what they are called)
« on: February 01, 2022, 14:43 »
Just wanted anyone's opinion on these heat weed wands

Are they any good and worth the money

I was looking at a gas one, seems simple enough, light it, point at the wed and they blacken and burn (well that is the theory anyway)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264850575245?hash=item3daa530f8d:g:yRAAAOSwaKJfTl3j

They were recommended in the newsletter some time ago, I never got one back then, but the weeds are taking over now, all this good weather is bringing hem back to life

Has anyone got one, used one or even know how efficient they are with weed control

Do the weeds come back ?

After seeing the way plants have grown back in the Blue Mountains in Australia, it makes me wonder

(I know some people out there that got caught up in a forest fire, they never got burnt out, but it was close, but they told me this year flowers and grass is in full bloom, even thought the fires were pretty fierce)
It's all about the journey, not the destination

They're great for annual weeds, but perennials will just grow back from the roots,  :( You'd have to do them repeatedly to kill them.
So just depends on what you are dealing with tbh

I saw someone using it to burn weeds on their plot - they got a bit enthusiastic and set fire to an established rosemary bush, which went up like a rocket!

The weeds did come back too ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Its mainly to kill off dandelions and those other flat weds with those leaves that lie flat to the ground and chick weed, my hens used to like them, but a dam fox got in, killed the lot

I've tried various weed killers over the years, they say it kiils them down to the roots (these roots must be miles deep, they keep coming back, even if I dig them out

I was going to try it out on my drive way

John did an article on these last year.

I've got one, and from his advice, (just stroke the flame over the weed for a couple of seconds, don't burn it to a frazzle), it works well on brick paths etc.!

They're not very expensive, and a gas bottle goes a surprisingly long way, as you only need a little flame!

I love the 'Whooop' it makes when you switch it off! (big kid)...

That is where I got the idea, I was reading some of the old news letters

I was wondering if anyone had bought one

I never saw any recommendations or reviews about it

Just wondering if anyone bought one, they are pretty cheap, even on ebau you can buy one with 6 bottles of gas

Goferit Pepsi, for a few quid, you get an almost instant result, and while perennials may come back, it all looks great for quite a long time!

That deal on Ebay sounds good,as we buy the bottles of gas there as well!

The new enviro' friendly option is "burning off" weed top-growth with steam, but I'm not aware of any non-professional equipment options presently.  So most of us will be stuck with the fire-stick option as a non-physical/non-herbicide method of top-growth control.
I chose to move up a step from the handy gardener-friendly burner and adopted a roofer's propane gas burner:  oh, it does the job alright and in no time at all, but, WORD OF WARNING, it also burned off the galvanizing coat on some rabbit netting (now rusty) that I was weeding along !!  Luckily it was a temporary rabbit fence (but still a loss of good netting):  I no longer use my burner anywhere near any galvanised wire fencing !
