Title: PSB and Spring cabbage
Post by: Blackpool rocket on July 17, 2021, 12:31
Hello all, I've not had a chance this past couple of months and have neglected to sow my PSB and spring cabbage.
Is it too late?
Thanks.

There's still time for sowing Spring cabbage, but probably a couple of weeks late for PSB - but still worth it IMO :)
Good luck!

Thanks, is the PSB thing a germination temperature issue, i.e. too hot now?

I can't think that it is reliable warmer in July than June, in our climate  :D
It's probably a day-light length thing, but shouldn't think the couple of weeks would make much difference with our topsy-turvy climate.
I will admit that mine (just germinated) are under some netting for shade, right now, though  ::)

OK, thanks mum.
Last year I left mine in small pots all summer. It never got more than about 4" tall.
At the beginning of Autumn I planted it out, thought why not. It was really good, ended up about 3' tall, very tasty. It was germinated in April/ Mayish.
The cabbage was the same, neglected all summer, left in small 3" pots, felt guilty and planted it out. Got the same result, fantastic leaves.
I'll give it a go!  8)

With everything behind for several weeks, BR, I'd get some going anyway!

You might even have discovered a way to beat the dreaded caterpillars too, as I've just noticed the tiny yellow eggs under the leaves, so by the time your plants are up, you'll save yourself all the bother of dealing with a million crawlers!

My earlier sowing off PSB got eaten so I have also got a late sowing,14 Jul, on the go  after trying, without success, to find some plants/plugs. Anyway sowed plenty of  them in a small pot with little hope of very many germinating.  Hey-ho most have and are now ready to be potted up individually. So here's hoping.

That's what gardeners do, Beepee, so best of luck!

I've even started some more runner beans and carrots because if the times/weather/temps etc., are right, we may just get a later crop if the current one doesn't do the business!
