It's called bolting and is usually caused by temperature fluctuations - and we've had a lot of those this year  ::)

I agree and also its been very dry, and onions need water on a regular basis. We have had very little rain now for 2 months, and I am watering each week . I turn the tap on and move the hosepipe around the patch while I do other work. The onions are looking well and starting to swell up.
