Title: Missing my frogs
Post by: Springlands on August 03, 2012, 10:47
I never thought that I would say this but is am missing the frogs in my greenhouse. Ever since I started growing my own tomatoes I have always had frogs in my greenhouse - do not know where they came from but there they were. This year for the first time in over 25 years - no frogs. Even though I used to complain about them jumping out at me when I least expected it I really miss them cos I am inundated with SLUGS. Come back frogs - please.  ::)

What do you think has happened to them Springlands?  Its not as though the weather has been too dry for them.  ::)

Springlands may not have a garden pond. We get common frogs in our garden and there is no pond nearby, so I assume they survive with the existence of nearby naturally occurring water courses.

Common frogs are protected in the UK from sale or trade so I don't know where you would stand by moving them from somewhere natural into your garden.

We still have lots of frogs in the garden - just not in the greenhouse. Maybe because it has been so wet outside they have not been tempted by the humid conditions in the GH whereas in drier years the GH would be nice and wet for them.

Unfortunately I do not have a pond but I could not imagine trying to catch a frog to put it in the GH - definitely not brave enough.  :tongue2:

I think you are correct , it has been a good year weather wise for anything aquatic.

Do you have access to a small boy who could frog wrangle for you ?  :)

Fix quoted text.

Most years, I'm chucking them out of my house :)

I think they like living in the soakaway drains in the driveway outside the house, and I guess they lay eggs in there. Every year when the babies hatch, some of them wander into the house (the door is always open in summer) and I have to catch them fast and rehome before the dogs find them.

When we had our cat she used to bring frogs into the house - I then had to get OH to rescue them.

I had no frogspawn at all this year in the pond at home - not even one little blob

There are frogs about (even one in the greenhouse the other evening) but they must all be one sort ,or all the other sort I think

Coudn't blame the weather as we had masses of spawn in the new pond at work.

It must be the year for frog misbehaviour, Springlands  :nowink:

That is what I want - for them to misbehave and jump out on me when I least expect it - that and to catch the slugs.  ::) ::)

The best one is when you water an unseen frog by accident and it squeals loudly.............

......makes one jump that does !

A few years back I picked up a pair of my shoes from the hallway and shoved my feet in them - except one foot wouldn't go in. I pushed harder and it still wouldn't go in, so I thought one of the dogs must have dropped a small toy or something in there. I put my hand into the shoe to pull it out - and it was a frog :)

That made my toes curl up.
