last year i had a freak sunflower growing in my allotment, probably fetched by a bird. it grew to about 3 foot and had a 15" diametre flower. will the seeds from the plant grow the same?

when should sunflowers be sown?

Sunflowers should be sown so that they can be planted out after any frosts. As a guide sow early May in pots to be planted out or Mid-May direct into the ground. 15th of May is the traditional day to sow marrows and other frost prone plants outside.

This used to be easy to remember as it was "Rook shooting day" when the young rooks were culled to control their numbers.

Im glad I came across this thread...was going to plant some sunflower seeds (russian giant) inside this week for the annual competition for the tallest sunflower with the children. Have never planted inside before and then moved but have read that you can get bigger plants by doing it this way...and as we all know bigger is definatly better  well as far as sunflowers go anyway

My children planted some seed last week and they are romping away, they will have to go in pots in the greenhouse for a while i guess.
