Cockerel Crowing - Old wife's tale?

Im sure this isn't true but thought I'd ask anyway. If a cockerel is kept in a dark coop it won't crow until it see's the light, i.e let out

My Bob Dylan used to crow at 2 am in the coop in the dark :shock:

Mine all crow in the dark. 7 of them!
Start at about 4.30 am, then go back to sleep and start again at 7.30am

Some do, some don't. I recently had them crowing at 6am*, I dashed out to see if something was breaking into the coop, found nothing, went back to bed (and sleep) and since then AFAICT they've been well behaved, so I'm wondering if they were disturbed by a fox after all, and I scared it off, for a few days at least anyway.

*I only heard them the once but I had an anonymous note from moany neighbour, saying they woke "his household" on a different morning, and on enquiring around, I found another neighbour who said they had been crowing at aroun 4.30 for the last couple of weeks.
How the dickens do they hear them when I don't? Especially the one who claims they woke him up?!? And no I'm not deaf or even hard of hearing.

One of our cockerel used to crow at 4:00am :shock: but we put him in the coop with other chickens + ducks and he doesnt crow know untill 7:00 am :shock: we think because its darker or it maybe because he cant be bothered so I dont know .

They'll even crow at night in cardboard boxes when you are taking them to a show.You want to try being stopped in your car at night by the bobbies when a chicken crows from the back seat.

Our little cockerel use to spend the nights in our down stair loo in a cat box and still he crowed.
He went to a new home where he crowed to his hearts content!

I read that providing they could not put their head up - they can't crow.

So you could raise the perch in the coop and it might work?
