New plot. Hmmm. What to Grow?
« on: May 28, 2010, 13:33 »
Howdy

Now that I have an allotment I'm going to try and be a little bit more adventurous than my safe little lettuce and tomatoes.

I'm down in Sussex and the weather is pretty warm now. I've probably got a couple of weeks of clearing and digging until I have my first bed ready. So it will be mid-June before I plant anything. I'm keen to get some courgettes, chard and onions growing first. Any other bright ideas for something exciting to try at this time of year? Also am I too late to start chitting and planting spuds?

Thanks

no need to chit potatoes now. if you can find them seeds just bung them in (salad crops i would suggest). for a head start you can start courgets, squash in modules and learn how to make richy's paper pots (from this site) and put some sweetcorns in. plant the seeds indoors and as soon as the seedlings appear start hardening them. in two-three weeks time you can have plants to put in and to give them care  :)
All the best and Ofcourse welcome to this great forum

and also you are not late for second sowing of peas and dwarf beans. either sow them direct or do them in the paper pots as wel. This is just a start and you can get more advice from expert people  :)

Welcome Christo,

I'd suggest putting in some rows of beetroot from seed, also some spring onions, the season is late this year the list is endless.
My i suggest you consider buying John's books, the month by month one is very helpful.

good luck on the plot  :)

Thanks for this AlotArds.

Plenty of choice then. Funnily enough I've just received John's book Essential Allotment Guide.  :D

I'll get stuck in.

Hi! I'm a newbie on this site so not sure if im allowed to post this, but my local homebase had seed salad potatoes reduced to 50p yesterday and most of them had started chitting fairly well!

Also if you're new on the allotment (we are still new as got it in late March) chat to people around you, some of your neighbours may have additional seedlings already going spare or just have realy good advice  :)
