what support do broad beans need?
« on: May 27, 2009, 18:35 »
Hi,
Have made a school boy error I think  and planted my broad beans with wigwams and plants at each corner .... they are growing well but have been reading about the type of supports needed for them

are wigwams wrong? if so what should I be using?

Depends on the height of the variety of bean.

Some need no support, some need a bit of help with say a couple of posts with string tied between, then tie the beans to the string.

They can be quite self-supporting of they are planted in double rows like this:

********************************
********************************

********************************
********************************

********************************
********************************

If they do need support, there are numerous ways and everyone has their own idea.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

the others on the allotment will think I'm barmy ... one of them told me that my canes were wrong some weeks ago ....in my naivety I thought they were too short so went and bought some 6foot canes and changed them!?!?

.... for info they are Bunyards Exhibition and on the packet its says they reach a height of 1m ...

oh well off to see what I can do with them tomorrow
