Thanks to this forum I now have eventually beaten the mice and managed to germiate some pea seeds in guttering in the greenhouse, that are now a few inches tall and ready to plant out. The peas are climbing peas 'Alderman'

Has anybody got any tips for supporting them, I've made cane structures for runner beans before, can you use these and if so how far apart is it best to space them?

They'll grow to around 5 feet high. Suggest you make a rigid structure with some 8 foot canes and get some pea/been netting.

I always use chicken wire mesh supported by strong canes.

It's a lot easier to erect than the fiddly plastic netting and you can use it year after year.

I did a few up wigwams in big pots when I only had a patio.  They needed some horizontal strings too (I think about every foot), but clung easily to those.  In fact, the habit is very like sweet peas.  This year I think I'll do the runner-bean row thing.
