Standard Euonymus
« on: May 28, 2012, 00:02 »
At the garden centre I saw a standard euonymus - at a price
Now I have a couple of euonymus plants around the garden, so does anyone know how I go about growing a standard one. I can take cuttings, but do you start with a longer cutting than normal.
To put it simply, how do you get the long stem?
Thanks for any advice.

Interesting link, Trillium - I'm a bit of a fan of euonymus and even though mine sometimes try to invade the hedge (thereby showing their ability to "vine") I've never seen one with a trunk!

Seems they can't do it naturally, hence the expense of grafting.  :(
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Can you do it like a fuschia standard where you secure a selected long, whippy stem to a cane then remove some of the lower leaves, and keep doing that as it produces more at the top until it reaches its desired height/
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thank you for your replies, and for your link Trillium.
It looks as though they cost a lot because they are grafted plants.
As I can get hold of cuttings easily I think I may try Goosegirl's suggestion and try the same way as a fuchsia.
Nothing ventured and all that.

thanks

Elaine
