Title: Blind Hen?
Post by: alibean on October 11, 2009, 16:43
Is it possible/common for hens to go blind or short-sighted?

I have one ex-batt (have head them for 18 months now so guessing she is about 2 3/4) called Blondie and she does seem to be getting more and more 'vacant'. (it's not a blond thing so lets not even go there......:)

She is quite happy to stay in the house for a lot of the time, she can find the food and water so no worries there, but the reason I think her eyes might be the problem is that when I toss the chickens some corn or other treats she just stands still and doesn't go for them at all.  Also she has become much more placid and just lets me pick her up without running away almost as if she doesn't see me coming.
Has anyone else had experience of this? I am a bit worried in case it's not just old age but something more sinister.

What is her comb colour like?

I have no experience of blindness in chickens sorry. I am assuming that the coop is clean?

My sight is going as well.

You can get glasses for chickens
