Christmas present for someone with an allotment?
« on: November 29, 2019, 22:29 »
Hi there, hoping someone can help

I have a friend who has an allotment and I am wanting to get them something for their allotment for Christmas. Not sure what to get but most gift ideas I see relating to allotments are things like starter packs of those 'my happy place' signs. He's had this allotment for nearly two years so knows what he is doing. Any ideas please? Thanks!

Ive been very excited by the gift of a delivery of manure before now! This year I want wellies. Also dwarf fruit trees, unusual seeds or tubers (yacon, soya beans, edible lupins or many others that are fun to try). For an expensive present how about a hotbin composter (i love mine!)

You could make a really nice gift with a trug or basket filled with jute twine, plant labels, a few seed packs and perhaps a trowel or hand fork and some gardening gloves.  An insulated mug is also useful for taking hot drinks to the plot, or a flask perhaps.

I got a Brother label maker a couple of years back and I was really pleased with that.  I've also been given pop up tunnels for crop protection which are always useful.  This sort of thing,

Fine insect mesh (sold as Enviromesh) is not cheap to buy but essential with some pests.  I'm sure that would be appreciated  :)

The gift of John and Val's books.
I've been giving my Husband the gift of quoting their books at him so he knows why I want/think things done a certain way.

A variety of gardening books - I have a comprehensive book of British weeds which I found second hand in Oxfam which is a favourite with all the family who have gardens.

Do you have a member of the friend's family who could advise on what he might like or want - or perhaps other plot holders have heard him wishing he had something in particular.

How about a starter subscription to 'Amateur Gardening'?

You can do a 'rolling' sub every three months, so if he wants to continue, that's up to him!

(And also, he can read them all again, next year)!

How about a voucher for a back massage?  :)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I think a nice gift of a tub of chicken pellets or blood bone and fish always goes down well.  Gardening gloves. Garden centre voucher.  Handmade voucher for an afternoons help at the allotment.   :)   :)

Second hand books ,fraction of the price . Recently found Geoff Hamilton's Cottage gardens and his practical gardening course.
Mrs Tenhens asked me this the other day and I suggested either a bottle of malt or blended , ideal for when reading the above mentioned books on a dark damp evening in my arm chair or splashed in a mug of tea at the veg plot on a cold day :) :).
we also rescue rabbits and guinea pigs, grow own veg
