Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day
« on: March 04, 2011, 11:15 »
So, with Pancake Day approaching fast do you make pancakes that day? What do you put in or on them? Has anyone got some interesting or unusual fillings to tell us about?

I quite like them with the traditional lemon juice and sugar, but I'm also quite partial to something like a nice creamy chicken and mushroom filling or something gooey like chocolate and banana.

Four thin pancakes with traditional* sugar and lemon for me, a couple each for the rest of the family and a couple of dozen made to put in the freezer.

I will have two pans on the go!  :)

* I think other toppings and fillings are crepe. ::)

Brian likes traditional lemon and sugar, and I usually have homemade jam, but many moons ago when I worked in Paris for a week, they introduced me to pear and chocolate crepes!!  Double yummy!!!!!

On Pancake day it has to be lemon and sugar, but I do like mascarpone and spinach pancakes for tea :)

I'm giving lemon & sugar a miss this year.

Going to try sugar & lemon instead.

ah, sugar and lemon juice for me - but hold the sugar.....

A few years ago we had a party on shrove Tuesday and for duff we fed our guests a cheat's version of crepes Georgettes - pancakes filled with confectioners' custard (creme patisserie for the posh folks I think) mixed with shredded fresh pineapples, all assembled en masse in a heatproff dish, sprinked with sugar and lemon juice (oh, PLJ actually) and slapped under a really hot grill for a few mins just before serving.  Absolutely gorgeous, dead easy (cos we built them all that afternoon needing jsut the grill flash), quite impressive but felt rather fattening!
The Dales - probably fingerprint marks where God's hand touched the world

Some nice alternative ideas, so far and lots of traditionalists! :D In both my local supermarkets on the pancake mix and plastic lemon stands ::) this year they are displaying syrup. What is the world coming to?  :D

Start off with chilli con carne filling and end with Nutella - have to have a sugar and lemon juice as well - it's traditional!

Everybody at work is going for golden syrup.

Someone mentioned doing a savoury first course with tuna, cheese and crisps  ::)

I didn't realise you could have savoury fillings until my first year at Uni.  I was surprised to say the least when people started piling ham and cheese on

I always revert to sugar and lemon, it's what I grew up with
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I do like lemon and sugar and agree it is the traditional way but I also like..
Fresh fruit and ice cream.
Banana and chocolate spread.
Golden syrup.

Ooooh, I want some now!

More different ideas! :D

I asked OH if he would like pancakes and if so what on them. Lemon and sugar (with an of course expression on his face :D). I said you can't just have lemon and sugar pancakes for tea. I'll do some soup first as I've done before. Have you? Yes, for the past few years!  ::) ::) :D

I remember spending several minutes debating this with my hubbie last year.  He couldn't see why he couldn't just have pancakes for dinner, with syrup or lemon and honey - no savoury fillings in sight.  When I pointed out that it was hardly a balanced meal and didn't contain any fruit or veg he patiently explained that lemon was a fruit.
Bless.

On Pancake Day, we accept that balance in the diet comes from the other meals that day!!

Sugar & lemon, maple syrup (not golden), jam, chocolate spread, bananas, stewed fruit if we have any - or any combinations of the above will be available.

I fry pancakes as fast as I can in 2 pans, the family help to cook & toss their own and we all stand around the kitchen cooking and pigging out on pancakes.

I've never managed to make too much batter!
