Learnt my lesson! Bought my onions too early!!
« on: February 12, 2010, 17:58 »
Well you were all right.  I bought my onion sets way to early (beginning of Jan).

I was panicking that they might not be in the shops for long.

I planted them out into seed trays of compost and put them in a nice dark frost-free place (parents' garage).  Went to check them today and they nearly all of the Red Baron and half of the Stuttgarter have got mould on them.
Arrgh.

So off to the garden centre tomorrow to find some more...

Next time I won't be quite so hasty.

Penny  ::)
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

You can buy them early, just store them cool and dry until planting time.:)

If you want to plant them to get them off to an early start, then they have to be in the light, but make sure the garage is warm enough...it has been very cold lately :(

You can also sow them into seed trays shoulder to shoulder and let them develop a nice root system and plant out after the last frost date. Just keep them in a cold frame or greenhouse in the meantime.

In 2008, that would have been sometime in June!

When is it this year? :tongue2:
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oo how annoying, I hope you can get some more to replace, I don't buy them at ths time of year.

I get mine in autumn and plant straight outside to overwinter. None of them have died off even with the cold and snow. I had a lot of success with this last year too. I put netting over the raised bed to keep my cats off and to stop birds pulling the bulbs up.

I can just leave them there right until harvest time now and get on with other stuff, they are supposed to be ready to pick earlier as well.

Over winter onions are not good storers. What do you do for onions during winter?

I didn't know that DD. I stand corrected - will get my coat  :(

I don't have enough growing room to keep self sufficient through the winter so everything is eaten up before it spoils.

Would you recommend a second planting of either seeds or sets started off in pots to go in after my autumn planted onions. Would there be time to plant and mature a second lot after my first lot have been harvested.

Or don't you bother with overwintered ones at all.

I do both.

The over-winter onions will mature June time, but they will be a useable size before maturity and they will bridge the gap between the spring planted onions running out and then coming in again later in the year.

Rotation issue aside, if you're talking about trying to grow them in the same bed, you won't have time.

My spring sets will go in around mid-March, but I won't harvest the mature winter ones until 3 months later at least,

That's what I hoped I had done.  Oh well live and learn.  I didn't think the garage was damp but maybe it is.  I am off to the garden centre today, in hope ...

Whilst they are both alliums, Aidy, a leek is NOT an onion.

I could recommend a good book or two to you! :tongue2: :tongue2:

Used in the kitchen as an alternative to Alliums, so I really dont care if allium or not, taste the same in soup etc, in fact in some instance better. Rarley bothered by onion fly, always there in the winter so why grow onions?  ;)

Sorry I misread - but the onions need to be in the light not the dark or they won't do anything.
