Title: Stupid cider question... Juicer
Post by: Sadgit on October 18, 2008, 11:18
Got about 100 apples and 1 Juicer, is it worth making cider using them and if so, can I just get the apple juice and err then what?

Cheers

You really do need a press and although you have a hundred apples, you won't really get enough juice from them to really make it worth while buying one of the smaller ones that are on the market.

Apart from a press, you've got to have some way of shredding the apples first. I use an electric garden shredder and the resulting pulp goes into my fruit press. I made over 50 gallons this year and I'm drinking the first batch (made from Katy apples) now. It's fabulous stuff! :drunken:

I juice my apples part as apple juice but some I ferment on. I bought a whole fruit juicer.

For cider if you don't want to spend on a press slice and freeze for a couple of days and then ferment in a bucket for a while then into a demi john or small amounts use pop bottles & oz caps

If you only have a little apple juice then you might try making a kiwi & apple or an elderflower & apple wine:

Litre of apple juice & 10 kiwi fruit(mashed)  OR Litre of apple juice and a good handful or so of dried elderflowers

Small tin of white grape juice/ 200g of minced up sultanas

Couple of pounds of sugar

Yeast & nutirent

Half a teaspoon of tannin if you like a slightly 'leathery' mouthfeel....

Water to 1 gallon

Get the lot going in a bucket for a couple of days 'til it calms down then strain into a demijohn and fit airlock. Rack off sediment etc and leave until ferment stopped - makes a pleasant white wine.

I made a gallon of Cider this year using a Juicer as I couldnt be bothered to get my press out for a late donation of Apples. It took quite a while to juice them but I think I got a better yield. However there was much more sludge from the juicer. Not a great problem as it settles out in the end
