I would like to know how to sharpen my garden hoe and spade more so the hoe.

A metal file is best for thinner metals, like most hoes. I find a small hobby angle grinder works well (and quickly) on thicker tools like spades and axes.
But make sure you don't make the spade too sharp, as if you hit a thick tree root you might actually get the spade stuck!

We had to wait 30 seconds before the old duffer finally got round to making a stroke. May I respectfully suggest that the hoe is held in a vice and both hands are then free to control the flat file.

Thanks for the replies I have brought the hoe home to do a proper job on it as it has no edge at all just flat.( bought at a car boot sale ) I got an extra long Handle gifted by another chap on the plot a real friendly bunch . They are all looking after me being the newbie on the plot the previous gardener let it go it hasn't been looked after properly for a number of years.
I am bringing it back to life cheers again
