Growing sweetcorn.......up in the Pennines
« on: January 18, 2010, 19:32 »
I'm going to try growing some sweetcorn this year and I'd like a bit of guidance from you sweetcorn growers out there

We're about 800ft up in the Pennines near Sheffield, so we have a shorter growing season than most.  We are usually 2 weeks behind Sheffield and one degree centigrade cooler, and Sheffield isn't exactly sub tropical!

Last year one of the local farmers grew a couple of fields of sweetcorn for the first time, so I'm going to try growing some too.

Has anyone got any experience / suggestions for a good variety to grow in this part of the world, with the shorter growing season and cooler temperatures?

personally I'd forget it unless you want to spend a disproportionate amount of time caring for the sweetcorn which will mean you aren't looking after the crops that will grow reliably.

still, don't trust what I say as I've just come back from Wilkinsons with a * fig tree...

Doh!

I think Lark or Swift may be shorter growing season sweetcorn.

I'd suggest you look at the T&M catalogue (available online through the Shop link near the top of the page) as they specify certain varieties are more suitable for our northern climate
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I grow sweetcorn every year on my plot in N Derbys and so do most of the other plotters.  It grows very well, but as it is fairly shallow rooting I earth it up a bit so it doesn't get blown over.  Sweet Nugget from Wilko has done particularly well  :)
