1st time growing sweetcorn
« on: July 23, 2009, 19:15 »
1st time growing sweetcorn, so can you please explain how i will know that it's ready to harvest?
The cobs are getting fatter and some of the tassels at the top of the cobs have gone brownish, so what else do i look for?

Seems strange only a few weeks ago i was saying that i had top tassels and no cobs, now they are all well on their way :)

As soon as the tassel turns golden brown they are at their prime. Enjoy. :D

don't wait too long - those darn rats will have them as soon as they are ripe enough
Now then, I am a very pleasant lad from York.  I have a decent half plot on Holgate allotments.

I was told to peel back some of the leaves and take a peak. I have had light yellow that tastes of baby corn and dark yellow that are a lot sweeter.

Be prepared to never find super market sweetcorn edible again once you have tasted homegrown.

Be prepared also to get tassels and leaves all over the place.

Some of my plants have cobs/tassles but others don't so far. I haven't seen much evidence of pollen either but it has been so windy that I am hoping any loose pollen has been well blown about at will have pollinated the plants.

I have a few of my plants with two cobs on, can't wait for some BBQ sweetcorn soon yum yum  :tongue2:

"1st time growing sweetcorn"

I expect you know this ... recommendation is that you have the pan boiling in the kitchen, and then go and pick the cobs, and hurry back! The sugar starts turning to starch as soon as you pick them ...

Peel one back a little, stick your nail in one of the kernels, if it exudes a milky substance it's ready, if not it's either too early or too late!  Lovely eaten raw, straight from the plant :)
