i have just stood and watched the flies go underneath! not sure how close to the root they are getting.

anyone know of a chemical solution.  past caring about organic methods now to be honest - don't even care if it poisons me!  i just want to be able to grow a brassica!!

There doesn't seem to be a practical chemical solution.

Try making your own collars out of beer mats with a slit cut in them, they seem more solid and you can push them firmly into the soil so the flies can't crawl under.

Some old guys I know swear by this method. :D

i'll try pressing the collars down.

it's been a long day and i am really shattered,  i just felt so depressed earlier watching those damn flies.  my garden is a big focus in my life and is pretty much my main motivation.  depression and anxiety is pretty bad right now,  and when i;m tired its even worse.

carpet underlay is perfect and make em big 8" across is just fine

Hi Jenny,

Just wanted to say 'keep your chin up'  :D

Sounds like it's been an exhausting day today.  I can empathise with what you're feeling as I'm sometimes there myself.

I hope you get a good night's sleep tonight, and that tomorrow one of your veg is doing better than expected.

At least you have cabbages to be eaten.  Mine took one look at my mini greenhouse when I put them outside, and turned up their toes (well, their leaves, to be more accurate   ).  Must sow some more this weekend if I get a moment to myself.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

they're not forced to have been root flies.  Coulda been anything.

I made brassica collars from a roll of damproofing tape I found in the shed. I made mine 6" square but I agree 8" would be better.  You can put a bit of soil over the top to weigh them down a bit

am planning to do exactly than compost queen - was going to sort out the soil around them.

planting out my squash plants and courgettes today,  sugar snap peas are looking good so thats cheered me up.

i have plenty of brassicas still in my mini greenhouse, growing well so if i do have issues i have reserves at least.  thought i may have gone over board with my seed sowing but seems i may need them after all now.

sadly no carpet underlay to hand so have had to improvise with corrugated thick card.  mind you am running out of that too. my mini cloches have worked well to get them sturdy enough rather than flop over tho.  well the smaller ones have,  the bigger bottle were a bit too tall,  so've cut them all down now, ready for the next lot.
