Just thinking ahead...

Does anybody out there have a 'make it yourself' Slug or snail trap ?

Just looking at my seedlings coming through and, you know the rest... :(

All ideas gratefully received.. particularly involving beer drowning. etc.,

Yours in anticipation

I'm trying J. Arthur Bowyers Garlic Barrier, I've spread it on the soil and the slugs don't like the taste and the plants take it up and then  the white/black flly don't like it either as the sap tastes of garlic and so does two jobs in one, sounds good but time will tell.

Hi, I always use plastic cups buried next to the plants half full of sugary tea or coffee dregs.I've been doing it for years and it works a treat. It looks a bit better half covered with a flat stone. The slugs and snails fall for it every time. Its not very nice to empty but its better than dead plants.

Sorry Shaun not completly with you there mate . I use 'em in the greenhouse closed environment but I'm a bit less willing to chuck 'em outside . Having said that needs must and in really bad attacks in they go.

Must admit I always feel a bit guilty . I like hedgehogs and thrushes so clean up were I can

use the plastic trays that take aways come in with their lid, cut a small hole in one side about half way up, put slug pellets inside and then lid on box and place next to plants....voila...slugs die but not local birds or hedgehogs or...

cut large pop bottle in half, reverse the top having removed plastic lid and place it inside of the base. fill with old flat beer dregs and semi submerge whole thing into soil next to plants....slugs slide over the edge and down the funnel into the bottle and can't get back out again

T.Y sweetpea. at least some ones trying to avoid hoggycide!! could you bury these slightly, and perhaps fill them with beer instead? I think if they were just on the surface that they may blow away?

No it is not.

Eh?
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

you could sink these into the soil with the hole as high up the side as you could put it and place a small stone on top as I am going to do...what you put inside is upto you..pellets or beer works :D

Another use for bottomless pop bottles is to sink them deep beside the roots of plants that need a lot of water and fill the bottle with water which is then fed straight to the roots of the plants...save watering the surrounding soil and places water where it is needed most :)
