Name that tomato...plus.
« on: September 16, 2021, 15:23 »
I have been working on a house where the lady owner grew these tomato. And I have to say that they are a cut above most for taste. I have a half dozen or so ripe ones to try and get seed. Can any of you put a name to them, and let me know if it's possible to grow them from seed? I'm thinking about all the ones that are not good for this.

There is a heirloom variety called Red Pear which grows prolifically like that with clusters of fruit.

Franchi seeds have a big beef steak variety that they call Franchi Red Pear, but there is also a small cherry tomato sized one around just called Red Pear, which might be your mystery tom.

I grew red pear this year & they were huge!
I’ve also grown a similar one to yours Russell that was called Santonio F1, looks more like the smaller of the 2 in your photo, not shaped as in the first picture

Wondering if the small pair of red toms on the right are San Marzano, as while they sometimes get enormous, we've had quite a lot exactly like those this year!

If you cut it open, and there are very few seeds, that might be another pointer to SM...

Thanks to you all for your input. mumofstig link to Red Fig is an interesting lead. They look incredibly similar to the ones i posted, and the write up seems very accurate. If they are Red Fig, is it bad news on seed viability???......like being F1. Not so bad in reality, because at least i have a name now. Just to say that the lady was given the plant via the friend of a friend and will never know herself which variety they are.....but she will be well pleased if they do turn out to be the named ones.

Found other suppliers that say it's an 18th C heirloom, not F1 at all  ::)
