Bad reaction to tomato foliage - anyone else?
« on: July 27, 2013, 22:21 »
I needed to prune back some suckers and take off some surplus foliage off my cordon tomato plants today and I get this every time I work with tomato foliage and stems:

Itchy skin, especially if I pinch stems out.
Harder to breathe; like constriction of airways.
Sore upper pallete in my mouth.
Sore eyes.
Also the smell of bruised tomato foliage makes my breathing difficult.

I am not allergic to tomatoes and potato foliage doesn't give me the same problems.

I think in future I will be wearing gloves and a breathing mask at the least - can't be healthy!

I get that with strawberry leaves.  I believe it's called "Irritant Contact Dermatitis".  I wear gloves when handling the leaves.

I get itchy hands from tomatoes and sometimes tiny blisters under the skin, eventually a layer of skin peels off where the blisters were. My hands are like that now, it looks unsightly to say the least  :(

:( :( I'm the same every time I deal with tomatoes. Also, if I'm having a good old rummage to cut back plants in the garden, my arms are sore and blotchy and itch like mad. The answer..... gloves (which I hate) and long sleeves. also anti histamine. But I would suggest that as your breathing is also affected that you see your doc. You may need inhalers during the summer. I carry one in case as I have a bit of history in the breathing department.

It's a good reminder that the tomato plant is poisonous  :( Strange that potato leaves don't have the same effect  ???

Gosh - you need to be careful if it affects your airways.
May be worth asking for an allergy test Kirpi.

You might not be allergic to tomatoes, but you could be allergic to the pollen, which seems to coat almost the entire plant by the end of the season.

I get a rash if I touch courgette leaves and runner bean leaves irritate too. Long sleeves and gloves are the answer to that. But as you are having problems with your airways I would advise you seek medical advice.
