Potash?

Hi
I have a solid fuel fire and tend to burn wood. I've read that wood ash is good for plants such as tomatoes and gooseberries....
Two questions
1, Assuming that it is good for the pants, do I just apply it around the plant and allow watering to take the relevant minerals down to the roots?
2, is there a specific time to apply potash or is beneficial at any stage of the plant's life cycle?

potash is high in potassium - so should be good for plants coming in to fruit

I tend to just scatter it round and water it in - there may be better ways but there aren't (m)any straight lines or right angles on my plot if you see what I mean - scattering and watering in is quick and easy and seems to help - will do for me.

'Spose one should be sure that the wood hasn't been chemically treated - hopefully something already considered by someone heating their home that way - but might be an issue for people buring off waste wood outside...
