I use a different colour if there is still a faint hint of last years writing (unless I randomly discover the exact labels from last year to what I am sowing which happened the other day 

But mainly its pencil which mostly comes of easily. 

Milk cartons, margarine tubs and lolly pop sticks all get saved for plant labels as well.

Why have I never thought of using milk cartons?

I use plastic knives, £1 for 100 from the local cheepo shop, write in pencil and use an eraser to clean them.

No matter what type of marker you use I find a rub with wire wool soon cleans them up .I have been useing the same labels for 3/4 years ,they are made from white soffit boarding .

Trashco have some plant labels in at the mo, 96p for 50, plus pencil. I only mention them as they've actually also got a hole in the pointy end, so you can tie them onto plants as well.

I like those labels to tie to the tomato canes, saves me bending down to look at the label in the pot

I once marked all my plant markers with one of those marker pens and didnt realise the pen ink was water soluble. The first time I watered my seed trays the labels were beautifully white again!

It was an interesting year that year!

I use generic names like carrot or swede or runner bean so that things can just be used again. I keep the packets so that I know what I planted each year. If it does well then it is used again, if not well try something else.
