How to harvest curly kale?
« on: October 01, 2010, 12:32 »
Hi all,

I'm not sure how to harvest curly kale? I've read that you should take the new growth as this will encourage side shoots and more growth. Does it mean take the growing tip out? Or just the new-ish leaves around it?

Thanks
Matt

Hi,

I harvest Kale from the bottom leaves upward, just as many as you need at one time, meaning that you are taking the older leaves and allowing the younger ones to develop.

I grew Tuscan black kale and you just cut the head off, leaving about 3 leaves at the side to keep generating food for the plant... and it sprouted 3 more heads per plant!! They're growing nice and big too!

Not sure if you'd do that with all kale varieties but... i'm game to give it a go to see what happens on my other varieties! :)
