Spent hops mulch
« on: April 30, 2010, 21:39 »
I have a steady supply of spent hops (40 litre bag a week if i want). Last autumn and winter i dug it all in to improve the soil structure and nitrogen content. Can i use it now as a mulch? Or is it too strong? would it scorch the stems of plants/seedlings?

I can't see it would be a problem. As the name says they're spent, they've had pretty much all the goodness boiled out of them, but will add humus to the soil and shoud make a good mulch although they may blow around a bit when dry.

Go for it.

I used spent hops as a mulch last year and it worked a treat , all the veg plants did well.

You need to drink some of the ale as well to get the full karma. :)
