A silly laying question??????
« on: May 03, 2010, 13:37 »
Hi all

I apologise in advance if this is a really silly question but........ I was under the impression that the girls would lay their eggs first thing in the morning. However my girls appear to lay anytime between 9am and mid afternoon. Is this ok?? They all appear healthy and happy.

If its normal I guess I shall just have to move my boiled egg time to the evening  :)

At first mine laid around midday and then it got later and later until they settled into laying first thing in the morning. Though I think mine do this so they don't have to walk back to the coop, so really out of pure laziness!

Mine all vary.  Some lay in the morning and one or two lay in the afternoon.  I find that they regulate themselves.  If they are laying late in the afternoon they eventually skip a day and lay the next morning.  In fact, all of mine have done that.  They seem to sort themselves out.

They say that it takes an egg 25 hours from one end of the chicken to the other!   so the times do change, but I'm sure my chooks don't lay evey 25 hours, or they'd be doing it in the dark some of the time!  ::)

I occaisonally find they've laid during the night - its a good job theres plenty of bedding under the perching bar!  But like others say, it seems to progress through the day then they skip a day and start in the mornings again.  With respect to the 25hrs, one day i had 4 eggs in the nest box - i've only got three girls!

During the winter months we regularly opened up the hen house to find 3 or 4 eggs had been laid during the night (from 12 girls) but with the nights being lighter again they generally manage to lay them between 6am and 5pm with the occasional late or early egg (usually soft ones).  They all taste good though!

There's no such thing as a silly question.  We have to learn and to do that we have to ask questions!

Likewise we don't make mistakes. ... I call them learning opportunites!  lo
